Orkney: Police made arrests in Kanana tavern shooting─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:04 Sat, 20 Sep 2025

The North West MEC for community safety has applauded police for the swift arrest of suspects involved in a shooting incident at a tavern in Kanana.
Fourteen months ago, MEC Wessels Morweng visited one of the taverns where there was a random shooting in Kanana outside Orkney. About 23 people were shot at, and seven reportedly died on the scene, with two in the hospital.
He was on an oversight visit to the newly built Kanana Police Station as part of the Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme in Matlosana Municipality on Friday (19/9).
“We are here as part of the program, but we have visited the station that we are intending to open very soon.
‘We work hand in glove’
“It's a very nice facility the government has built for the people. We will make sure we work hand in glove with the police.
“You will recall last year, there was an incident here where almost 50 people were shot at a tavern. Today, I can confidently report to the people of North West arrests have been made. People are going to court, and we are sure we will secure their sentencing.’
Morweng stressed the importance of reporting back to the community after visiting crime scenes. We have stabilised the crime in this area, and the number of murders has decreased.
He said rape incidents are still a concerning challenge in the area. The government is working closely with the acting commissioner, Maj. Gen. Patrick Asaneng.
He committed to the station management that he will continue to engage with the Provincial Management and the police minister to mobilise resources for stations around the province, as challenges are similar and raised at every oversight.
