Across South Africa, some municipalities and provinces are being celebrated for setting new standards in financial integrity, good governance, and sustainable service delivery.
The inaugural 2025 Municipal Performance Awards and the National Good Governance Awards have shone a spotlight on municipalities that demonstrate fiscal discipline and excellence in administration, paving the way for more resilient and responsive local governance. Among the standout achievers are municipalities from Central South Africa.
These include the Namakwa District Municipality, Frances Baard District Municipality, and ZF Mgcawu District Municipality, all of which received national recognition for outstanding governance and financial performance on Friday (3/10).
The Midvaal Municipality was named the best-performing municipality in Gauteng at the inaugural 2025 Municipal Performance Awards held on Friday (3/10). The municipality received the Best-Performing Municipality Award in Gauteng, in recognition of its contribution to the property industry in the area of municipal sustainability.
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our staff, public representatives, and residents who work together to drive sustainable growth and development,” said Midvaal mayoral spokesperson Idah Satikhe.
“We would like to extend our gratitude to our residents for their commitment to paying rates and taxes and to our teams for their tireless efforts to serve and uplift our communities.
“We are proud of this recognition, and we remain committed to good governance, sound financial management, and excellent service delivery.”
The Namakwa District Municipality was awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement in attaining clean audit outcomes for the 2023/24 financial year during a gala dinner at the 2025 National Good Governance Awards.
The Frances Baard District Municipality was also awarded for its achievement in attaining clean audit outcomes for the 2023/24 financial year, and the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality was awarded in recognition of its outstanding achievement in achieving 100% Conditional Grant Expenditure.
In the Western Cape, six municipalities scooped top national awards, and four DA municipalities earned well-deserved recognition in the Best-Performing Municipalities category. These are Saldanha Bay and Swartland jointly, Swellendam, and Hessequa.
“The DA welcomes the findings of the Auditor General, in which, for the third year in a row, every Western Cape government department and entity has achieved an unqualified audit,” said Western Cape DA finance and budget spokesperson Leon van Wyk.
“Across all 14 departments and 11 entities, no material misstatements were identified, and financial statements were submitted on time and of consistently high quality.”
