A Free State police officer has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court for the murder of his wife.

Thabo Maile shot his wife, Nomsa, seven times while asleep on the couch in February this year. The incident sent shockwaves through the local community.

Maile was arrested at the scene and remained in custody until his sentencing on Wednesday (8/10). The department of social development in the Free State has welcomed the court’s decision and commended the criminal justice system for its diligent work.

“We applaud the justice system for proper investigation,” said spokesperson Thembile Nqabeni. “The Free State government remains resolute in its commitment to eradicating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), and any collaboration with perpetrators.”

Social development MEC Mathabo Hlalele also expressed her support for the verdict, stressing its importance in sending a strong message to other perpetrators. “It is also our grave concern as government over recent incidents where victims have been coerced, manipulated, or incentivised into withdrawing their cases,” Hlalele said.

“We call upon all victims, especially women, to stand firm and refuse to be deceived and hoodwinked by empty promises and pursue justice. Hence, we are happy that Nomsa Maile finally got justice.”

Maile’s sentencing comes amid intensified efforts to combat GBVF. The Free State government recently launched a 90-day action programme aimed at addressing both the historical and contemporary roots of violence against women and children.

This initiative includes targeted support for civil society organisations and seeks to repair the socio-economic damage left by apartheid-era policies, including the breakdown of family units due to the migrant labour system.
