Barloworld Equipment has officially handed over Africa’s first CAT 250 skid steer loader, marking a major milestone for the continent’s construction and mining sectors.
The arrival of the CAT 250 highlights the strength of the long-standing partnership between Caterpillar and Barloworld Equipment, which dates back to 1927. Through this collaboration, African customers gain early access to world-class technology and exclusive product offerings.
Caterpillar’s limited global release of only 20 units underscores the exclusivity of the model and showcases the trust placed in Barloworld as a strategic partner within Caterpillar’s international dealer network, said Caterpillar equipment senior sales representative Quentin Coetzee.

“Being the first CAT 250 to arrive in Africa positions Barloworld Equipment at the forefront of innovation. This specific unit is number twelve of only 20 produced globally, commemorating Caterpillar’s 100th anniversary,” said Coetzee following the handover in Hamilton, Bloemfontein, on Thursday (30/10).
Redesigned for next generation
The new CAT 250 Skid Steer Loader introduces several upgrades over the previous 262D3 model, including a redesigned exterior and interior, a larger operator station, and improved in-cab technology, he added.
It now runs on a 55 kW turbocharged CAT C2.8 engine delivering higher performance with various attachments. The maximum lift height has been increased by 150 mm, improving efficiency in pallet and material handling.
“The new SSLs were developed with customer feedback at the forefront, so there are product enhancements and features that really reflect what end users want.

This design choice serves as a visual link between current equipment and the company’s heritage, underscoring a legacy of innovation and reliability spanning one hundred years,” said Coetzee.
Future of compact equipment
The launch of the CAT 250 signals a broader evolution in Barloworld’s compact equipment lineup. It has increased focus on smart connect technologies, sustainability, and life-cycle management through Barloworld for the equipment offered to their clients.
“This is a high-spec machine, moving this type of equipment into the next generation, into the next league where no nearest competitor is currently enjoying what we have to offer.”
