Crash on N1 near Kroonstad causes traffic delays─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:11 Wed, 24 Dec 2025
Motorists travelling on the N1 north of Kroonstad towards Heuningspruit have been warned to expect delays and to drive with extra caution following a serious crash on Wednesday morning (24/12).
The incident occurred at about 08:15, approximately 20 kilometres north of Kroonstad, when a heavy motor vehicle collided with a light motor vehicle. According to Free State Road Incident Management System (RIMS) spokesperson Sipho Towa, only one northbound lane remains open to traffic, while the remaining lanes have been closed to allow emergency operations to continue.
Emergency services rushed to the scene where occupants of the light motor vehicle were found trapped. Towa confirmed that two people sustained critical injuries, while two others were moderately injured.
Rescue teams are continuing their efforts to assist the injured and clear the scene. Motorists have been urged to reduce speed, remain alert, and strictly follow instructions from traffic officials and emergency personnel.
Authorities have also advised road users to consider alternative routes where possible to avoid congestion in the affected area. Drivers are reminded that conditions may change as the situation develops, and patience is advised while emergency services work to restore normal traffic flow.
