A Potchefstroom animal shelter is urgently appealing for community assistance after its only rescue bakkie broke down.

The bakkie, which is central to the shelter’s daily operations, is used to transport injured animals, respond to emergencies, and move pets to safety. With the vehicle out of service, Paws Haven says it has been forced to turn away rescue calls.

Paws Haven is a local animal shelter known for rescuing injured, abused, and abandoned animals. The shelter cares for more than 400 dogs and 300 cats.

The shelter has urged the public to assist in any way possible, whether through financial contributions towards repairs, the donation of a suitable bakkie, or by connecting Paws Haven with potential sponsors.

“The breakdown of our bakkie has impacted our daily operations and our ability to respond to urgent animal rescues,” said Paws Haven volunteer Dawn Baker. “We’ve had to rely on alternative transportation, which has resulted in delays when responding to rescue calls.

“A sponsorship or donation of a suitable vehicle for animal transportation would help a lot. As for resuming full operations, a new vehicle would make a huge impact and allow us to respond more effectively.”

A reliable vehicle means quicker response, safe animal transport, and every bit helps. “Let’s get Paws Haven back on track,” she said.

Tips on how to help animals in shelters:

  • Adopt a pet: always consider adopting from a local shelter or rescue group.
  • Donate: donations may be used to help cover the costs of daily operations.
  • Volunteer: you can help make life better for animals in your community by volunteering.
  • Make wishes come true: Shelters and rescue groups always need towels, toys, and other supplies.
  • Say thanks: Take a minute to express your gratitude to the people who work at your local shelter or rescue groups.

The shelter has promised to provide updates as soon as the vehicle is back on the road. Meanwhile, they are asking for understanding and patience from the community during this difficult time.

“We would also like to thank everyone who called, sent messages, shared our post, and offered help. Your support truly means more to us than words can say.”
