Search launched after cash-in-transit heist in Rustenburg─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 15:51 Tue, 17 Feb 2026
North West police have launched a search following a brazen cash-in-transit robbery in Rustenburg.
On Monday afternoon (16/2) at around 16:40, security personnel were travelling along Kremetart Street in Old Geelhout Park in a cash-in-transit vehicle when a Toyota Fortuner travelling in the opposite direction collided with the driver’s side door of the cash vehicle.
The impact forced the vehicle to stop, after which it was reportedly blocked by a Toyota Hilux (Legend) double cab bakkie, said North West police spokesperson Col. Adèle Myburgh. Approximately 15 armed suspects then confronted the security officers.
“The guards were removed from the vehicle, dragged a short distance away from the cash vehicle and made to lie face down. One armed guard was disarmed while the suspects gained access to the vehicle and stole an undisclosed amount of cash.”
The suspects allegedly set alight both the cash-in-transit vehicle and the Toyota Fortuner used in the collision. Several shots were fired during the incident.
The suspects fled the scene shortly thereafter, and no injuries were reported, she added. Investigations are ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this stage.
Last year, a cash van, carrying two security guards, was travelling on the N4 near Majakaneng, southwest of Brits, when several vehicles blocked it.
A group of heavily armed suspects emerged and began firing shots at the van, causing the vehicle to come to a halt. According to police reports, the suspects overpowered the crew and stole their firearms.
During the exchange of gunfire, a guard was struck by a bullet in the abdomen. The suspects, believed to be well-prepared, used explosives to blow open the cash van before making off with an undisclosed amount of money in a convoy of three vehicles: a Mercedes-Benz, a Toyota Fortuner, and a Toyota Hilux.
