The police and the SA Civil Aviation Authority have taken over the scene of a fatal light aircraft accident in North West.

The Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) received a satellite distress alert from an aircraft’s emergency locator beacon in the Klipgat area early Thursday evening (19/2). After investigating it, authorities confirmed a light aircraft carrying two occupants had crashed.

The accident site has since been formally handed over to the police and the accident and incident investigations division of the Civil Aviation Authority for official investigation. ARCC chief Gregory Critchley confirmed both occupants sustained fatal injuries.

Scene control

The ARCC immediately activated first responders through the North West and Gauteng early warning networks. A helicopter from the Gauteng traffic police was dispatched and successfully guided the police to the accident site. Emergency medical teams from Gauteng, ER24, and Trauma 911 also responded to the scene.

Search and Rescue South Africa (Sarza) assisted police with scene control and coordination, working closely with the ARCC.

Deepest condolences

“The ARCC extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased,” said Critchley. “We wish to sincerely acknowledge and thank the following organisations for their rapid and professional response: the police, Gauteng traffic police helicopter, Gauteng emergency medical services, ER24, Trauma 911, Netcare 911 HEMS, Rocket HEMS, and Sarza.

“Their dedication and professionalism, both on scene and behind the scenes, were invaluable during this tragic event.”
