A family-focused event is about to take place at the Free State Botanical Garden to support local households.

The programme, titled Me & Mommy, focuses on maternal support and interactive play between parents and children. This initiative uses outdoor activities and structured dialogue to help local families build stronger connections.

The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday (15/3). This gathering is part of a broader project, aimed at strengthening the family structure in the community.

The session provides a platform for mothers to network and share motherhood experiences. Professionals, including a clinical psychologist and social workers, will lead the programme.

The goal is to move beyond a classroom setup by using a picnic setting, and interactive games, to facilitate communication.

“Our main focus is to create a platform where mothers and their children can bond, and where mothers, themselves, can have a supportive network with other mothers,” said the social worker part of the programme, Thabo Letsoge.

Professional guidance and play

The activities planned for the day are specialised games, facilitated by trained staff. Each game ends with a debriefing session to help participants process the experience. If parents require further assistance with their relationships at home, the social workers on-site will provide referrals to relevant experts.

A clinical psychologist will lead a one-hour group talk, focused on parenting. This discussion covers different parenting styles and offers guides for effective communication.

The session aims to provide practical tools for mothers to use in their daily lives, while their children engage in the planned activities.

“We educate the mothers in terms of how to communicate and how to relate with their children,” said Letsoge.

Letsoge encourages mothers to attend to learn from the perspectives of others. The initiative emphasises that parenting support is available, and mothers do not have to handle challenges alone. Interested participants can find information on the Me & Mommy Facebook page.
