The North-West University prides itself on upholding and protecting the dignity of all members of its community, regardless of race, political affiliation, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

The university has suspended a student for one year after he was found guilty of vandalising the LGBTQIA+ Pride flag mural on its Potchefstroom campus. The student appealed against this sanction, which is currently being processed.

The incident, which took place on Monday, 2 March, sparked widespread outrage and renewed conversations around inclusivity, hate speech, and freedom of expression within higher education spaces.

The student was identified by CCTV footage, and he was apprehended. Investigations against him were launched by the university, leading to his suspension.

Among the graffiti were the words “Heil Hitler”, the term “Nazi”, and a decorated swastika over the flag’s colourful design with the letter RH added. Photographs of the vandalised mural were widely circulated on social media.

“The student was found guilty on charges of hate speech and malicious damage to property,” said NWU spokesperson Louis Jacobs. “He has made an appeal against his suspension; however, the suspension will remain intact until the appeal is finalised.

“In terms of the manual on student discipline, the appeal does not stop the enforcement of the sanction. The sanction is a clear message that acts like this, which stands in direct opposition to the NWU’s values and ethos, will not be tolerated.”

Actions and discriminatory conduct aimed at undermining the sense of belonging for students, staff, and other stakeholders will not be tolerated, he said.

The university further condemned the vandalism of the flag and called it an “unacceptable act that stands in direct opposition to our values and ethos.” It also made a complaint of malicious damage to property to the police.

This is not the first time the flag has been vandalised, causing distress among LGBTQIA+ students and allies. In August 2023, it was covered with white paint, and in September last year, derogatory homophobic slurs were spray-painted on it.

Despite this, the university maintains it is resolute in its mission to foster an inclusive and respectful campus culture. It has reiterated it will continue to implement educational programmes, dialogue initiatives, and awareness campaigns to combat discrimination and promote understanding.
