Suspect to appear in Vrede court for armed robbery─── ZENANDE MPAME 15:15 Fri, 27 Mar 2026
Residents of the eastern Free State have been urged not to walk or hike alone, especially early mornings or late at night.
A robbery suspect, 31, is set to appear in the Vrede Magistrate’s Court on Friday (27/3), facing a charge of armed robbery. Free State police are searching for the second suspect in the robbery.
On Thursday, a security officer from an informal settlement outside Vrede was walking to work in Cornelia when he was approached by two unknown males. The suspects allegedly pointed a firearm at him, instructed him to sit down, and searched him.
They reportedly robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash from his wallet, his firearm licence, and his official access card. The suspects also forced the victim to remove his security uniform trousers and instructed him to run towards an open field.
The victim ran to his parents’ home for help. He said the suspects are known to him, and the matter was reported to the police.
“On the same day, police arrested one suspect, while the second suspect remains at large,” said Free State police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring. “A case of armed robbery is under investigation.”
“We urge community members not to walk or hike alone, especially during early morning or late evening hours. Individuals are advised to travel in groups or arrange accompaniment to enhance personal safety.”
Meanwhile, Gauteng police are searching for four robbery suspects in connection with a business robbery in Ironside, Vaal, on Wednesday (25/3).
Six armed suspects arrived in three vehicles and robbed a store. During the robbery, a shootout occurred between the suspects and the victim, resulting in two suspects being fatally shot.
Another victim sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to the hospital. “Police in De Deur are investigating a business robbery and two counts of murder following a shooting incident at a local shopping complex in Ironside,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko.
“The remaining suspects fled the scene in two vehicles, and a manhunt has been launched. Police investigation is underway.”
