Speed remains one of the leading causes of road incidents and fatalities in North West.

This is according to North West community safety and transport MEC, Wessels Morweng, who has urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and cooperate with law enforcement officers.

As part of ensuring compliance, the department deployed law enforcement officers to operate speed camera relays on major routes linking the province to neighbouring regions.

On Friday (3/4), approximately 49 motorists were fined for exceeding speed limits, with two drivers receiving heavy penalties for excessive speeding. One motorist was recorded travelling at 153 km/h in a 120 km/h zone, while another was caught driving at 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

In total, 287 summonses were issued for various traffic violations, and 46 vehicles were discontinued.

“Speeding is a huge challenge and goes with human behaviour; we plead with our motorists to always remember speed kills and the road is a space to share,” said Morweng.

Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities broadened operations beyond speed enforcement. More than 400 vehicles and 578 individuals, including truck drivers and passengers, were stopped and searched during a roadblock conducted on Thursday.

The operation involved police, Home Affairs officials, members of the South African national defence force, and traffic authorities.

North West police spokesperson, Anne Magakoe, said two undocumented immigrants were arrested during the operation. Additionally, two livestock transport vehicles were turned back after failing to produce the required health certificates.

Authorities also issued 23 traffic fines amounting to R35,700, along with three J534 notices for vehicle defects and documentation non-compliance.

Public awareness remained a key focus, with officials distributing 164 pamphlets addressing concerns around foot and mouth disease and sexual offences.

Authorities have reiterated their call for motorists to exercise caution, particularly during peak travel periods, stressing that responsible driving can significantly reduce road fatalities.
