The Rocking the Vaal festival is set to take place on Saturday (11/4) at the Emerald Resort and Casino in Vanderbijlpark.

The non-profit, family-friendly community gathering serves as a music festival that will host two Guinness World Record attempts involving baking 30,000 pancakes and preparing 3 tons of chili con carne.

Organiser Jaco Verwey and his team are finalising preparations to host thousands of people from across the region, with the primary focus on venue readiness and the coordination of technical and safety logistics for large-scale food production.

To ensure all production meets food industry standards, supplies will arrive on-site on Friday evening to be stored in 18m cooling units. While the record attempts are a central attraction for the public, the festival’s core mission is charitable.

“Any food not consumed on Saturday will be distributed immediately through the Rotary Club to reach people in need within the Vanderbijlpark area,” said Verwey.

Charitable impact and regional support

All financial profits from ticket sales and fees are processed within two weeks of the event and sent to a community chest to assist with regional needs, such as repairing electricity substations in areas facing prolonged power outages.

The venue offers a variety of family activities, including game drives, river trips, and access to an animal park and resort restaurants. Children under the age of 13 enter for free to encourage family participation.

A dedicated health tent and on-site emergency services, including doctors and ambulances, will be stationed across the venue to manage injuries or heat-related illnesses, supported by security protocols to manage crowd flow.

Tickets remain available for those traveling to the region for this post-Easter gathering. For those unable to attend but wishing to support the cause, the organisation provides information on how to contribute to their community aid and local infrastructure projects on their website.

The experience of participating in a world record attempt benefits charity and makes the event a worthwhile family outing, said Verwey. “It’s just a really good, fun festive day with a great incentive of helping people in need.”
