The JB Marks municipality says it is introducing a formal and functional system to assist residents who continually complain about poor road conditions.

Amid fears about the safety hazards on Potchefstroom’s streets, potholes can now be reported at the municipal customer care desk and through other channels, such as cellphones.

The municipality said dedicated teams are deployed to handle these reports, supported by a structured weekly pothole repair programme implemented by the roads and stormwater unit as part of ongoing road maintenance.

Potholes have been a major concern for motorists in Potchefstroom, especially at busy intersections and on main roads across various areas.

“The municipality has a formal and functional system in place for the reporting and management of potholes,” said JB Marks municipal spokesperson Jeanette Tshite. “Residents can report potholes through the municipal customer care desk as well as via available communication channels.

“The municipality is currently prioritising critical industrial and arterial routes, including Jeppe, Promosa, Ross, and Mogolodi roads, due to their importance as key transport routes within the jurisdiction of the JB Marks municipality.”

Central business district

Maintenance operations will continue in Potchefstroom’s central business district, the Bult, Miederpark, and Baillie Park.

Potchefstroom Herald previously reported one of the biggest sections of road in the city that needs urgent attention is the corner of Retief and Luke Streets. A big pothole and numerous smaller potholes have surfaced in this area, making it difficult for motorists to stay in their lane when turning.

Near the intersection of Retief Street and Rivier Street is another very impassable area. Due to the potholes over the entire stretch of road, drivers must either drive carefully or weave through them in a zigzag pattern.

Walter Sisulu Avenue on the south side, next to Waterbok Avenue, is also filled with dangerous and deep potholes, which are very difficult to see at night.

“It should be emphasised that current interventions are focused on arterial roads to ensure maximum impact with available resources. The municipality apologises for the inconven”ience caused as we work to ensure safe and lasting repairs.”
