The Free State education department is mourning the death of an HTS Sasolburg Grade 9 learner during the FNB Classic Clash at DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg.
Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, 15, collapsed during a school rugby match in Sasolburg on Friday (10/4) whilst participating in an under-15 match against Sasolburg High School. The match has been a highlight on the local school calendar for approximately 47 years.
Nhlakanipho experienced breathing difficulties during the match, emergency medical personnel responded swiftly, and he was rushed to Sasolburg Hospital. He was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Free State Education MEC, Dr Julia Maboya, expressed shock and deep sorrow at the sudden passing of the young learner.
“We are deeply shocked by the tragic loss of Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, a young life cut short. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the HTS Sasolburg community,” said Free State education spokesperson Howard Ndaba.
“We will support the school and family in any way possible and appreciate the swift response of medical personnel. Nhlakanipho’s passing reminds us of the fragility of life. We stand with his loved ones and the school community in mourning this loss.”
HTS Sasolburg posted on the school’s Facebook page confirming the death of Nhlakanipho and extending condolences to his parents, family, friends, teachers, and the entire schooling community during this difficult time.
His rugby coach, Thorne Swart, shared a post and said: “You were not the biggest, but we lost a giant of our game. We lost a brother. You will always be remembered for your hard work on and off the field.
“Just being good was never enough for you. You always strived to be excellent and great in what you do, academics and sports. Words can’t describe the emptiness you left behind.”
“The future ahead of us will not be easy, but in these tough times, we should remember that Nipho was never a guy who gave up. That mindset will help us through it and play it in your name, the Nipho season.”
The provincial education department said it will also support the school that was part of the tournament.
