The family of a slain police officer has expressed deep anger, grief, and a growing sense of distrust toward law enforcement following the release of nine officers accused of his murder.

Johannes Phafane, 35, David Matothi, 31, Edward Mokake, 45, Lebohang Senxezi, 33, Vuyisile Kabuza, 45, Ikakeng Maropeng, 42, Teboho Monaune, 37, Lehlohonolo Morapedi, 38, and Tsheliso Mohoboko, 44, appeared before the Bultfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday (13/4). They were granted bail of R3,000 each.

They face four counts of murder linked to a fatal shooting incident in Phahameng. The case has been postponed to 26 May as investigations continue.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Puseletso Sera, the brother of the deceased Cst. Mojalefa Borole, described the accused officers in harsh terms, questioning how the community could ever trust them again. “It’s been difficult for us because we live with these people daily.

“The way these investigations took time left us with emotional trauma. I won’t be happy to see these hypocritical maniacs carrying firearms within the community saying they are serving the community.”

Sera believed his brother’s death was not accidental but deliberate, alleging that Borole may have been targeted due to an internal investigation he was involved in at his station.

Their mother and sister have both suffered significant health setbacks since the incident, he said. “We will fight until justice is served. Because if they could kill one of their own, what does that mean for the rest of us?”

The fatal shooting occurred when police responded to a call involving a family dispute in Phahameng. The occupants of the house reportedly locked themselves inside and barricaded entry points.

Officers carried out a tactical entry, during which multiple shots were fired. Three civilians and Borole were killed at the scene. Investigators recovered 43 empty cartridge cases from inside the house, raising questions about the level of force used during the operation.

The NPA is expected to determine the next legal steps while the case remains under investigation.
