Investigations are officially underway after a UFS student passed away on the Bloemfontein Campus.

On Friday (14/4), the student was scheduled to cross the stage and receive a degree during the afternoon graduation session. But a day that was supposed to be a major milestone in her young life turned to sorrow for her friends and loved-ones.

Cuzi Mulalo Mukwevho was a graduate from the faculty of natural and agricultural sciences, however, passed away on campus grounds shortly before the ceremony. The university has confirmed the cause of death remains unknown, pending further medical and police reports.

After learning of the incident, the university officials paused the ceremony to inform the attendees of the loss. To honour the memory of the deceased and show solidarity with the grieving family, the university leadership called for a moment of silence.

Those in the hall stood in collective grief, bowing their heads in a quiet tribute to a life cut short at the moment close to academic success.

“The university extends its heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends, and fellow students. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”

Officials have emphasised the need to protect the privacy of the family as they navigate the initial stages of their grief.

The university has specifically asked the public to allow the family space and to refrain from spreading unverified information or speculation regarding the identity or the circumstances surrounding the death until official channels provide further updates.

The student was one of 8,350 graduates set to be honoured across various faculties this month.

The graduation season began on a high note at the Qwaqwa campus from 10 to 11 April, continuing at the Bloemfontein campus from Thursday to Saturday.

Support services and counselling have been made available to students and staff members who were present or affected by the sudden passing. While the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting a family whose day of pride was unexpectedly transformed into a day of mourning.
