Free State to host National Freedom Day and community dialogue─── REFILWE BEKANE 08:06 Sat, 25 Apr 2026
The national department of sport, arts and culture, said 27 April is more than just a date; it is a day where South Africans chose hope over fear, and unity over division.
The department hosted a community dialogue on Friday(24/4) at the Norman Doubell Hall in Heidedal. The event was organised in partnership with the Free State Office of the Premier and Mangaung metro. The theme was “Freedom and the Rule of Law: Threats and Solutions”.
As part of the broader Freedom Day programme, the Free state department of sports, arts, culture and recreation initiative has been moving around various schools in Bloemfontein to ensure Freedom Day is celebrated across the community.
This includes an outreach on Thursday (23/4), at Heidedal and Joe Solomon Primary Schools in Bloemfontein. The programme focused on nation-building and new forms of willingness while reminding learners and educators of the significance of Freedom Day.

The dialogue session serves as a platform for government officials, youth, and community leaders to evaluate the democratic progress of South Africa since 1994. Participants are focusing on finding ways to tackle the crime, unemployment, and racism affecting local communities.
The discussions also addressed the presence of drug and human trafficking, while also looking at the impact of illegal migration.
It also explores barriers to education as a factor that influences the long-term success of the rule of law. By facilitating this engagement, the department aims to identify practical solutions to these societal threats through collaborative governance and active citizenship.
Meanwhile, the government is preparing to host the National Freedom Day celebration in the Free State on Monday (27/4).
This annual event, which marks the transition to democracy in 1994, will take place at the Dr Rantlai Petrus Molemela stadium in Bloemfontein.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to arrive in Bloemfontein on Saturday (25/4) to lead the official proceedings.
The programme includes a formal address by Ramaphosa, various cultural performances, and reflections on more than three decades of constitutional governance.
National and provincial departments are currently organising logistics to accommodate attendees at the stadium. This event concludes the Freedom Month programme, focusing on the historical significance of the 27 April 1994 elections and the current state of democratic institutions in the country.
