Welkom police search for suspects following fatal shooting─── REFILWE BEKANE 10:00 Mon, 27 Apr 2026
The Welkom police are currently investigating a murder case after a shooting incident near a local lounge bar.
The shooting happened on Saturday (25/4) at approximately 22:30. Police were summoned to the Doorn area, where they discovered the body of a man in the street.
He was later identified by his brother as Pitso Jonas Motaung, 46, and was found with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
Free State police spokesperson Sgt. Palesa Thabana said Motaung had briefly walked to his car and was returning to the establishment when two men approached him.
Witnesses reported hearing three gunshots, which fatally wounded Motaung, and the two suspects left the scene on foot. Thabana confirmed while investigations into the murder are officially underway, no arrests have been made yet.
The police are urging any members of the community with information that could assist in the investigation or lead to the arrest of the suspects to come forward.

The investigation continues as detectives work to establish a motive for the shooting and trace the individuals responsible for his death.
Meanwhile, the Senekal and Marquard Crime Prevention units, together with the Selosesha tactical response team, arrested four foreign nationals following community reports regarding alleged drug dealing in Matwabeng, Senekal, and surrounding areas.
Police said on Friday (24/4) they received information from community members regarding individuals allegedly selling drugs.
Officers acted on this information, which led to the arrest of the four individuals.

The four suspects, aged between 26 and 39, are expected to appear in the Senekal magistrate’s court on Tuesday (28/4).
They face charges including dealing in drugs, possession of drugs, dagga, and suspected stolen property.
