Residents urged to use heating methods safely ahead of winter─── ZENANDE MPAME 11:38 Tue, 26 May 2026
As winter approaches, heating your home safely is critical to prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
As temperatures drop, the government calls on citizens to protect themselves and vulnerable loved ones. As people attempt to avoid the cold weather, the number of reported fires typically rises throughout the winter.
In winter, many households turn to heaters, electric blankets, gas cylinders, and other heating devices to stay cozy. While these items provide much-needed convenience, they also pose potential fire hazards if not used correctly.

Important fire safety tips to keep your home warm:
Electrical appliances
- Winter often means more electrical appliances are plugged in, increasing the risk of electrical fires.
- Don’t overload power outlets with heaters, electric blankets, and other appliances all turned on at the same time.
- Avoid connecting multiple extension cords or power strips.
- Turn off and unplug devices when they are not in use.
“A fire at your home can happen when you least expect it, and that is why it is good to have measures in place to avoid excessive damage or loss,” said Fidelity Services Group communications and marketing group head Charnel Hattingh.
“In the event of a fire, ensure you and your family have an escape plan. You should have at least two ways to exit a room in your home in case of a fire, and ensure there is a safety door.
“The keys to the door should be placed at a predetermined centralised spot. Store any important documentation and emergency contacts in a fireproof safe.”

Heated blankets
- Before using the blanket, make sure it does not have any damage or wear.
- Turn off electric blankets before you fall asleep or leave the room.
- Never fold or roll up an electric blanket, as this can cause overheating.
- Avoid placing anything on top of a turned-on electric blanket, including other blankets or pets.
Northern Cape police have urged residents to implement safety measures during the winter period and remain alert. “If your residence catches fire, get out, stay out, call for help, and never re-enter your burning house for pets or personal belongings,” said Northern Cape police spokesperson Col Cherelle Ehlers.
“We urge all residents to ensure that all fires in fireplaces are extinguished and heaters are switched off before going to bed. They should be responsible, conscientious, and safe at all times.”
