Working Together in Ending Violence against Children is this year’s theme for National Child Protection Week.

The week will be observed across South Africa from Friday (29/5) until 5 June. Government, social workers, and civil society organisations will be calling on communities to work together to protect vulnerable children from abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation.

The annual campaign aims to raise awareness about children’s rights as set out in the Constitution of South Africa and the Children’s Act.

This week has been commemorated in the country since 1997 and remains an important initiative supported by the department of social development in partnership with organisations providing child protection services.

“Child Protection Week reminds us that every child has the right to grow up in a safe and caring environment free from abuse, neglect and violence,” said Vrystaat-Versorging in Aksie social worker Ashley Olivier.

“Protecting children is not only the responsibility of social workers and organisations, but of every community member who can help create a safer future for our children. This year’s theme highlights the importance of partnerships between government, organisations, and communities to protect vulnerable children,” she said.

As part of the awareness campaign, Engo Family Care in Bloemfontein, together with Childline Free State and Vrystaat-Versorging in Aksie, will host a child protection walk on Saturday (30/5) at Villa Avianto, 40 Spesery Avenue, Kwaggafontein, Bloemfontein, from 08:30. It promises to be a fun-filled day for the entire family.

Children, pets, and everyone are welcome. There will be jumping castles for the children, water points along the route, and the Villa Avianto Coffee Shop will also be open. Entry is free, but attendees are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items or toiletries for underprivileged children and families supported by the organisations.

Community members will be able to register for the walk in advance through a QR code shared on social media platforms.

Concerning statistics released by the department of social development and the National Child Protection Register revealed more than 26,000 cases of child abuse and neglect have already been reported during the 2025/26 financial year.

“More than 3,200 cases related to sexual abuse and statutory rape remain a major challenge,” said Engo social worker Febe Groenewald. “Deliberate neglect is the second most common form of abuse reported, followed by physical abuse and child abandonment.

“Teenage pregnancies are also increasing, while many sexual offences against minors occur in homes and schools, with perpetrators often being family members, acquaintances, or peers.”
