Call for responsible dog ownership after fatal Klerksdorp attack─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:50 Tue, 09 Jun 2026
Calls have been made for dog owners to ensure their pets are safely enclosed in their yards following a fatal dog attack in Klerksdorp.
The appeal comes after a woman was allegedly mauled to death by dogs in the early hours of Friday (5/6)morning.
During a North West legislature sitting in Mmabatho on Tuesday, EFF MPL Primrose Sonti conveyed her condolences to the family of the deceased and urged dog owners to take greater responsibility for the safety of others.
“We urge dog owners to be vigilant or mindful of pedestrians around their dogs and exercise personal safety. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring dogs are safely enclosed in their yards.
“In our attempt to stay safe from rampant crime, we equally have a duty to protect one another.”
The police said an unidentified woman, believed to be in her 30s, was allegedly attacked and killed by dogs in Magaretha Prinsloo Street in Klerksdorp around 05:45 on Friday.
North West police spokesperson Col. Adéle Myburgh said her body was discovered by a man from a nearby residence while he was on his way to work.
“He immediately reported the incident to the police, and Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) declared the woman dead at the scene,” said Myburgh.
Multiple wounds
The deceased sustained multiple wounds across her body consistent with dog bites. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear as no eyewitnesses have come forward.
Eight dogs found at a nearby residence were taken into SPCA custody, removed from the premises, and euthanised.
Myburgh said an inquest docket has been opened, and investigations into the matter are continuing.
The police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation or help identify the deceased to contact the Klerksdorp detective branch commander, Col. JC Scholtz, on 082 578 0187, or the nearest police station.
Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS App.
