Three people have died, and six others were injured following a multi-vehicle collision on the R57 between Petrus Steyn and Heilbron on Saturday (13/6) morning.

Emergency services were activated at approximately 05:20 after four vehicles were involved in the crash. The collision involved a light motor vehicle, a trailer carrying a light motor vehicle, a minibus and a heavy motor vehicle.

Road Incident Management Systems chairperson Sipho Towa said three people were declared dead at the scene.

“Four patients sustained serious injuries, while two others suffered moderate injuries. All injured patients were stabilised on the scene by EMS personnel and transported to Tokollo Hospital in Heilbron and Pelonomi Trauma Centre in Bloemfontein,” said Towa.

He said the Accident Investigation Unit was activated and conducted further investigations at the scene.

Motorists travelling on the R57 between Petrus Steyn and Heilbron have been urged to reduce speed, remain vigilant and follow all instructions from emergency and law enforcement personnel.

“Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones. We extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time,” said Towa.

The latest crash adds to the growing number of fatalities on Free State roads. It follows another fatal accident reported on the N3 between Vrede and Warden on Friday, where a truck and a light motor vehicle collided, claiming the lives of three people.

Meanwhile, the Mangaung metro has expressed condolences following the tragic death of a child in an incident involving a water truck in Ward 33, Botshabelo.

Authorities have once again appealed to motorists to adjust their driving behaviour according to weather conditions, maintain safe following distances and avoid unnecessary risks on the roads during the winter season.
