The suspect was arrested on Wednesday (22/7) after exchanging gun fire with officers responding to a robbery complaint in Masenkeng, Oukasie. A 68-year-old alleged his grandson had assaulted him and stolen his licensed firearm from his home.

The suspect allegedly fired two shots at the complainant, but missed him, before fleeing. Police immediately launched a search operation, which was later reinforced by members of the Brits Tactical Response Team, Crime Prevention, and other police units.

“During the search, the suspect was spotted, but fled towards nearby mountains before running through residential areas,” North West police spokesperson Col. Adéle Myburgh said.

The pursuit continued until officers cornered the suspect near a primary school. He allegedly opened fire on police, prompting an exchange of gun fire, before entering a residential property where further shots were fired. 

A police sergeant, 41, sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg and was taken to a medical facility for treatment. A female bystander, 46, was also shot in the right leg during the confrontation. The woman was treated in hospital and discharged shortly afterwards. 

The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital, where he remains under police guard while receiving medical care. Police have opened several cases against the suspect, including robbery, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a municipal area.

Additional charges may be added as the investigation progresses. The stolen firearm and ammunition were recovered and seized for forensic examination. North West acting provincial commissioner Maj. Gen. Ryno Naidoo wished the injured officer and civilian a speedy recovery as the investigation continues.
