Thembeni Nxangisa served as the Free State MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs from May 2019 until October 2021 before being appointed MEC for agriculture and rural development, a position he held until 2023. He was elected to the Free State Legislature in 2019. 

ANC Free State provincial spokesperson Thabo Meeko said Nxangisa dedicated his life to serving the people of the province.

He said during his tenure in government, Nxangisa worked tirelessly to improve municipal governance, support traditional institutions and revitalise the agricultural sector, while placing a strong emphasis on empowering young people. Meeko described Nxangisa as a committed leader who played an important role within the ANC.

'A dedicated member of the ANC’

“Comrade Nxangisa served the people of the Free State with distinction in various capacities. He was a dedicated member of the ANC Free State Provincial executive committee where he contributed to the strategic direction and renewal of the organization. 

His deployment in the ANC political education committee championed ideological grounding of the movement. The ANC in the Free State extends its deepest condolences to the Nxangisa family, his comrades, friends and all who were touched by his life and work.”

Meeko said the ANC had lost a dedicated cadre, a selfless public servant and a passionate advocate for young people and the poor. Meanwhile, radio personality Nyakallo Leine, popularly known as Ba2Cada, also expressed his sadness following Nxangisa’s passing.

In a Facebook post, Leine reflected on the role Nxangisa played in his early career, saying the former MEC opened doors for him as an aspiring master of ceremonies and radio presenter. He said Nxangisa booked him to perform at events long before becoming an MEC and consistently encouraged him to pursue his talent.

Free State Legislature speaker Mxolisi Dukwana also conveyed his condolences to the Nxangisa family and ANC members.

“On behalf of the Free State legislature, I wish to convey our deepest condolences to the family of Thembeni Nxangisa, as well as his colleagues and comrades in the African National Congress. Nxangisa served the people of the Free State with commitment throughout his time in this legislature and in the executive council. 

“His contributions to the work of governance and oversight in our province will not be forgotten. We stand with his family during this difficult time.”

Dukwana said details regarding Nxangisa’s memorial service would be communicated in due course following consultations with his family.
