Lané van Rooyen will represent the country at the World Laser Run Championships in Portugal in October, a multisport competition that combines running and laser pistol shooting. She says becoming the only senior SA woman to meet the standard is the result of years of hard work, discipline, and pushing through challenges.

“It has always been a big dream of mine to wear South African colours. It is also a privilege as it reflects all the efforts I have put in, as well as the support from everyone who has backed me along the way.”

Van Rooyen reflects on her journey, describing it as tough but rewarding. “Like most athletes I have also had setbacks, disappointments, and plenty of hard training days. But every challenge has made me stronger both mentally and physically.”

Getting to her present level has shown her that consistency and determination as well as believing in herself really do pay off. Like many other student-athletes, she has to find a balance between her university studies and her sporting commitments.

“Balancing varsity and high-performance takes a lot of planning and also discipline. There has been many early mornings, late nights, and also weekends spent on training instead of going out or just relaxing.

“It’s not always easy, but the time management and resilience I have learned will help me grow in sport and later in life after I finish my studies,” she added.

Preparation is key when competing on the world stage. Van Rooyen is now focusing on getting herself physically and mentally ready for the challenge ahead. 

“My preparation includes structured running sessions, laser shooting practise, strength training, conditioning, and proper recovery. Apart from that, I am also focusing on my nutrition, mental preparation, and race strategy.”

Van Rooyen needs R40,000 to cover the costs of competing in Portugal. International flights and accommodation are among the biggest expenses. “I am very grateful to everyone who has helped me because every bit of support has brought me closer to my destination.”

A fundraising campaign has been started to finance her expenses. R12,500 has so far been raised of the full amount needed by the end of September to ensure she can participate in the championships taking place from 25 October to 1 November in Portugal.
