Three suspects are expected to appear before the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court on Friday (14/8) after they were arrested for allegedly robbing a hitchhiker at gunpoint between Wolmaransstad and Vryburg in North West.

The suspects are facing charges relating to the alleged robbery and possession of an imitation firearm, as well as a related business robbery. According to a police report, a woman who was hitchhiking from Wolmaransstad to Vryburg accepted a lift from occupants of a white Volkswagen Polo before allegedly being robbed at gunpoint. The incident occurred on Wednesday (12/8) at about 15:00.

About three kilometres outside Wolmaransstad, the driver allegedly pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the victim and demanded her money and personal belongings. She was then dropped off in an isolated area. Unknown to the suspects, the victim had hidden her cellphone and managed to take a photo of the vehicle.

North West police spokesperson Col. Anne Magakoe said the photo was circulated through community groups, leading to a police lookout.“Following a swift police response to information received, two males and a female, aged between 26 and 39, were traced and arrested in Makwassie. The victim’s property was also recovered.”

Magakoe said a preliminary investigation established the weapon allegedly used during the robbery was an imitation firearm. An additional charge in terms of the Firearms Control Act is expected to be added.

She also confirmed the owner of the vehicle has been linked to an alleged business robbery on Sunday (9/8) along the Broadbent N12 in Wolmaransstad.

Police investigations into both incidents are continuing.
