A murder case is being investigated after a woman, 22, was allegedly shot and killed in Bohlokong in the Free State.
Free State police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring said the couple allegedly argued at their residence on Sunday (16/8). “During the altercation, the boyfriend allegedly shot his girlfriend, who died at the scene.
He then went into the street where he sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to hospital.”
The firearm was seized for further investigation and forensic analysis. Mophiring said the motive for the argument has not yet been established.“The investigation continues. No previous domestic-violence case has been registered involving the couple.”
A similar incident occurred at Matwabeng near Senekal on Sunday (9/8), when a man allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend before taking his own life at their residence.
“Both were declared dead at the scene. The firearm was seized and will form part of the investigation. A case of murder and an inquest are under way.”
The police remain deeply concerned about incidents of gender-based violence and intimate-partner violence in our communities.
Members of the public, particularly young people, are urged to seek assistance when relationships become abusive or conflict escalates.
Victims and witnesses of abuse are encouraged to report incidents of violence to the police or other relevant government departments and support services. Early intervention can help prevent situations from escalating.
