The Central University of Technology’s vice-chancellor and principal will take early retirement at the end of December. A report by ED News Africa says  Dube cited ongoing medical issues in a letter to the CUT Council chairperson dated 31 July. 

The report says she indicated her health had affected her productivity and ability to perform her duties at full capacity.

CUT spokesperson Qondakele Sompondo disputed the report, saying Dube’s decision to retire early was personal and voluntary. The university is not aware of any health concerns linked to her departure, he said, adding the decision was made independently and had been accepted by the council.

The university council thanked Dube for her leadership and contribution during her tenure. CUT said her term included efforts to strengthen its academic and research profile, expand strategic partnerships, support innovation and entrepreneurship, improve student success, and advance implementation of the university’s Vision 2030 strategy.

Dube described her time at CUT as a privilege and thanked the council, executive management, staff and students for their support. She said although she will step down from her role, she intends to continue supporting CUT and the broader higher education sector after her departure.

The council will now consider the governance implications of Dube’s notice, including arrangements for an acting vice-chancellor and principal. CUT said further communication on the leadership transition will follow once the relevant processes have been concluded and the necessary decisions have been taken.

Sompondo said the university remains proud of Dube’s leadership and contribution and wishes her well for the next chapter. CUT also thanked her for helping shape its strategic direction and strengthen its position in the higher education sector, while expressing hope for an ongoing positive relationship.
