A North West murder accused will face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody after being rearrested hours after allegedly fleeing from police while being transported to a clinic in Taung.

Tshepo Lobelo was rearrested on Tuesday (1/9) following a multidisciplinary search operation launched after his reported escape. Lobelo was among four detainees who were being transported from Pudimoe police station to Maganeng clinic in Taung for medical treatment.

Upon arrival at the clinic at approximately 10:50, Lobelo allegedly fled into nearby bushes, said North West police spokesperson Col. Anne Magakoe.

“A search operation was immediately launched, and the 72-Hour Activation Plan was invoked. A multidisciplinary team comprising various police units and specialised resources was mobilised to trace the escapee. At approximately 19:45 on the same day, the team successfully rearrested him.”

Lobelo was initially detained in connection with a murder committed in 2024. At the time of his escape, the matter had reportedly been remanded to Monday, 7 December.

He will now face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody and is expected to appear before the Pudimoe Magistrate’s Court on Friday (4/9), said Magakoe.

The circumstances surrounding the escape will also be investigated, including the detainee’s transportation, restraint, and supervision.

North West provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams commended the multidisciplinary team for its swift response and the successful apprehension of Lobelo.

“An escape from lawful custody is a serious matter, and every effort will be made to ensure that those who attempt to evade the justice system are brought back to face the full might of the law.

“We commend all the members who worked tirelessly to ensure that the escapee was rearrested within hours,” said Adams.

Investigations into the escape from lawful custody are ongoing.
