Sergeant Mahlomola Peter Kareli died on Wednesday morning (9/9) after a period of ill health. Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said his death had deeply saddened the Free State SAPS family.

Kareli was a familiar, trusted voice for the organisation and a vital link between the police, media and communities across the Free State. He joined the police force on 14 July 2008 and served for more than 18 years. He worked in several policing environments before transferring to provincial communications in 2014.

Mbambo said Kareli helped share essential policing information and kept the media and public informed about SAPS activities, operations and initiatives. Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Solomon Lesia offered his heartfelt condolences to Kareli’s family, friends, colleagues and everyone who worked closely with him.

‘Voice synonymous with Free State police’

“Today, we have lost more than a colleague. We have lost a dedicated member of the SAPS family who represented our organisation with commitment and professionalism. His voice became synonymous with policing in the Free State, and his absence will be deeply felt by colleagues, the media and the communities we serve. We extend our deepest condolences to his family at this difficult time. May they find strength and comfort in knowing that his service to the people of the Free State will be remembered.”

Free State police asked the media and public to respect the bereaved family’s privacy as they mourn. Kareli is survived by his wife, daughter and son. Police described Sergeant Kareli as a devoted family man who deeply cherished his loved ones. Details of the memorial and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
