The police bid farewell to one of their provincial police spokespersons on Saturday (19/9), as his funeral service takes place at Kananelo High School in Phomolong, Kroonstad.
Sgt. Mahlomola Peter Kareli, a member of the provincial corporate communication and liaison component, 47, died on Wednesday, 9 September, after ill health. His colleagues, family and members of the media gathered at the Bobbies Park Sports Centre in Bloemfontein for a memorial service on Thursday (17/9).
He was remembered for his dedication to the SAPS, his commitment to his work and his support for those around him. Kareli joined the South African Police Service on 14 July 2008 and served in several policing environments before transferring to provincial communications in 2014.
His work saw him become a key link between the police, media and communities, sharing information about policing operations, activities and initiatives across the province.
Free State police director of communications Brig. Thandi Mbambo said the provincial SAPS family deeply mourned Kareli’s passing. “He was a well-known and trusted voice of the organisation who understood that policing also involved keeping communities informed.
“We have lost a dedicated member of the SAPS family who represented our organisation with commitment and professionalism. His voice became synonymous with policing in the Free State, and his absence will be deeply felt by colleagues, the media and the communities we serve.
“We remember Sergeant Kareli as a dedicated member of SAPS whose presence touched the lives of many people. He understood that policing is not only about responding to crime, but also about communicating with the media and informing the community with confidence."
Former corporate communication and liaison head, Brig. Motantsi Makhele, described Kareli as “A Good Samaritan” who would always stop to assist, recalling an accident scene where people were trapped inside a motor vehicle in the darkness on the N1 National Road, regardless of how much of a hurry the team was in.
Free State police extend its deepest condolences to his family at this difficult time. “May they find strength and comfort in knowing that his service to the people of the Free State will be remembered,” said Mbambo.
Kareli is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and two children, Phahamo, 8, and Letlotlo, 16.
