Traffic volumes are expected to increase from Wednesday (23/9), as holidaymakers travel between the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. The Free State is also expected to attract visitors with its wildlife and nature experiences, lifestyle events, and sporting activities during the holiday period.

Road users have been urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and remain patient and courteous, particularly in construction areas where lane restrictions may apply. Ongoing roadworks are expected to affect several sections of the 415km N3 Toll Route as holiday traffic increases.

Particular attention should be paid to construction between Heidelberg and Villiers, Warden and Harrismith, and Estcourt and Nottingham Road. Motorists should expect lane restrictions and possible delays through these areas as traffic volumes increase, N3 Toll Concession chief operating officer Thania Dhoogra said.

At least one lane in each direction will remain open to traffic in the affected construction zones. However, the combination of lane restrictions and increased holiday traffic could result in congestion and delays, particularly during peak travel periods on the busy route.

Roadworks are necessary to maintain and upgrade the vital transport corridor, but N3TC recognises that lane restrictions can disrupt traffic and cause congestion and delays during busy travel periods. The company apologises in advance for any inconvenience motorists may experience, Dhoogra said.

Motorists can help keep traffic moving safely by reducing speed, obeying temporary traffic signs, maintaining safe following distances, and allowing other vehicles to merge. Patience and courtesy are particularly important when traffic becomes congested or vehicles are moving through restricted construction zones, she said.

Higher-than-usual northbound traffic volumes are expected on Sunday (27/9), when many holidaymakers return home. This could result in delays and backlogs in construction areas near Hidcote and Mooi Toll Plaza, as well as around the Wilge and De Hoek Toll Plazas, Dhoogra said.

Changing weather conditions could also affect motorists along the N3 Toll Route. Drivers may encounter rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, mist and, in high-lying areas, snow. Road users should check weather and traffic conditions before leaving and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.

Motorists are also encouraged to carry emergency supplies, adjust their speed to prevailing road and weather conditions, and avoid fatigue and distractions. Those undertaking longer journeys should take regular rest breaks and allow enough time to reach their destinations without rushing.
