Free State educators have secured seven awards at the 26th National Teaching Awards. Three teachers claimed first place in their respective categories at the national ceremony.

The ceremony, hosted by the department of basic education at Birchwood Hotel in Benoni on Thursday (1/10), recognised educators for their contributions to teaching and shaping the country’s future. The awards also place a spotlight on the role of teachers in shaping future generations, as South Africa prepares to mark World Teachers’ Day on Monday (5/10).

The achievement comes as the province continues to recognise excellence in education, following a provincial awards process that saw 68 finalists compete across 17 categories.

The national recognition highlighted the contributions of Free State teachers in areas ranging from classroom teaching and school leadership to inclusive education and specialised subjects.

Mpho Mosala from Letlotlo Naledi Public School in Bothaville was named National Best Teacher. Hendrik Kachelhoffer from Hoërskool Trio High School in Kroonstad received first place for Excellence in Secondary School Leadership. At the same time, Tshepang Oliphant from Mangaung secured first place for Excellence in Inclusive Education Teaching.

“Seven awards, seven stories of excellence, and one proud Free State,” said provincial education spokesperson Howard Ndaba.

“During the awards, celebrated under the theme Uniting for Excellence: Elevating Achievement, Empowering Educators to Shape South Africa’s Future, the Free State emerged as a powerhouse.

“These educators have raised the Free State flag high. Their dedication proves that quality education lives in our classrooms. We are simply excellent!”

Addressing the national ceremony, Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa reflected on the influence teachers have on learners.

He said his principal recognised his potential and allowed him to continue learning, describing this as an example of the lasting impact educators can have on young people’s lives.

Ramaphosa said the National Teaching Awards highlight excellence across different education phases, subjects and school environments, including rural and township schools.

He also emphasised the need to improve foundational literacy and numeracy, support professional development, and create better conditions for teachers.

He called for schools to be safe spaces, highlighting the role of education in addressing gender-based violence, harassment, and abuse through teaching respect, dignity, equality, and consent.

“The future of our country is being shaped every day, in every classroom, by every lesson taught and by every learner encouraged to succeed. If we want better educational outcomes, we must invest in better teaching.”
