Free State teachers are being recognised for their contribution to shaping learners and communities as South Africa observes World Teachers’ Month.

World Teachers’ Month is celebrated under the theme, Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status and Shaping our Futures. Schools, parents and communities in the Free State are being encouraged to strengthen their support for educators and recognise the important role they play.

Free State education MEC Dr Julia Maboya extended her appreciation to educators across the province and said teachers play an important role in shaping the future of learners. World Teachers’ Day was celebrated globally on Monday (5/10).

“To every teacher in the Free State, thank you for shaping futures. We stand with you.”

Free State’s national best teacher Mpho Mosala said collaboration between teachers, parents, communities, and the department of education will be key to strengthening the province’s education system.

Mosala was recognised at the 26th National Teaching Awards at Birchwood Hotel in Benoni on Thursday (1/10). “The award that I received is not only for me, but for all the hardworking teachers.

“Standing with educators means that as parents, society, the SGBs, the department, and the community, we must make sure that we stand together with our teachers to ensure that the education of our South African children is in good hands.

“It is very important to motivate learners so that they can be motivated to learn. I make them feel loved, appreciated, and seen, and they know that when they enter my classroom, they are not just my learners, but my kids.

“Teachers, you are making a huge impact in our learners’ lives. Do not underestimate your efforts. Keep on doing the good work that you do, and eventually your efforts and dedication will be recognised.

“As teachers, we must make sure that we collaborate. We must not work in isolation. We need to share the best practices that we have with each other to improve the education system of South Africa.”

The department encourages schools, parents, and communities to use the month to recognise educators and strengthen support for the teaching profession.
