Police warn Northern Cape stokvel members ahead of festive season payouts─── SIYAKHOLWA MBATYAZWA 11:18 Sat, 24 Oct 2026
Northern Cape police are urging stokvel members to take precautions when withdrawing and distributing their savings.
Increased cash withdrawals and stokvel payouts during the festive season could leave members vulnerable to robberies and theft, particularly when withdrawal times and payout arrangements are predictable. Northern Cape police spokesperson Capt. Nomthandazo Mnisi said police are urging stokvel members and organisers to take precautions to protect their savings and personal safety.
Police recommend using electronic transfers instead of cash, avoiding predictable withdrawal times and locations, keeping payout arrangements confidential, remaining vigilant at banks and ATMs, and making appropriate security arrangements when handling large sums of money.
Mnisi said police are advising members to watch for suspicious individuals or vehicles after visiting banks or ATMs and to report any suspicious activity immediately. Members are also urged to avoid displaying large amounts of cash in public or sharing details of their savings and payouts on social media.
“Stokvel organisers are also encouraged to engage with their financial institutions to explore safer ways of collecting contributions, depositing funds and distributing payouts, reducing the need to handle large amounts of cash.”
Criminals may use predictable routines and publicly available information to identify and target potential victims. Mnisi said stokvel members should keep their financial arrangements confidential and remain vigilant throughout the payout period.
“Police in the Northern Cape will continue to conduct crime prevention and high-visibility operations across the province during the festive season. Community cooperation remains essential in preventing crime and ensuring safer communities.”
Police are also urging members of the public to remain alert, take precautions and report any criminal or suspicious activity. Mnisi said vigilance and cooperation could help communities protect their savings and improve safety across the Northern Cape.
