Free State police are investigating the death of a man whose body was discovered in the basement of an abandoned building in Bloemfontein’s central business district.
The body was discovered on Monday (27/10) at the old Post Office building in Yoxall Street. According to the information available, Sgt Thabo Litsoane of Parkweg detectives received information at around 09:45 from WO Swannie Swanepoel of the K9 Unit regarding an inquest scene.
Upon arrival, Swanepoel pointed out the body of an unidentified man lying in water beneath the building. The deceased was wearing a green T-shirt, black shorts, and black safety boots.
Free State police spokesperson Sgt. Sinah Mpakane said the deceased was later positively identified as Siyabonga Boqwana by his girlfriend, Michela Jansen. All relevant role-players attended the scene.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death, while investigations continue. The discovery comes amid other cases involving bodies found in open spaces and bodies of water across the province.
In June, a woman’s body was discovered in an open field in Ipopeng, Bloemfontein. Preliminary assessments revealed no visible injuries on the body. The woman was wearing a white T-shirt with blue floral patterns and black boots. In a separate incident in June, the decomposed body of an unidentified man was found in the Namahadi River near Clubview in Phuthaditjhaba.
Members of the Phuthaditjhaba police search and rescue unit, assisted by the Maluti-a-Phofung municipality fire and rescue services, responded to the scene and retrieved the body from the water. The deceased had reportedly been wrapped in a blanket and tied to a stone with wire. Police investigations into the latest death in Bloemfontein are ongoing.
