Police investigate killing of Metsimaholo DA candidate─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 14:47 Tue, 27 Oct 2026
The DA in the Free State is mourning the killing of its Metsimaholo caucus leader, who was shot in Sasolburg on Monday (26/10) evening.
Thulani Mbana was allegedly shot several times at close range by two unknown men at his residence in Taylor Park, Zamdela, at around 21:40. Free State police spokesperson Brig. Thandi Mbambo said the deceased was at his home when two men approached him and called out to him.
When he approached them, one of the suspects allegedly produced a firearm and shot him several times before both suspects fled the scene on foot. Mbana sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
Free State provincial commissioner Lt. Gen. Thabang Lesia has activated the Zamdela Trio Task Team and Serious Organised Crime Unit to investigate the murder, trace and apprehend the suspects, and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Motive
The motive for the killing has not yet been established, and police have not confirmed whether the incident was politically motivated. All possible leads are being pursued as part of the ongoing investigation, said Mbambo.
Police have appealed to community members who may have witnessed the incident or have information that could help identify and trace the suspects to come forward. The public has also been cautioned against spreading unverified information or speculation on social media, as this could compromise the investigation.
Meanwhile, the DA in the Free State said it was deeply saddened by the death of its caucus leader and Ward 14 candidate. DA provincial leader Dr Roy Jankielsohn said Mbana joined the party in 2017 and dedicated himself to political activism, community service and building its grassroots structures.
“Thulani joined the DA in 2017 and dedicated himself to political activism, community service and building the party’s grassroots structures. As caucus leader, through election campaigns and by-elections, and in his work as a councillor and MMC for spatial planning and human settlements while the DA was in government, he remained committed to representing the people of Metsimaholo and ensuring their voices were heard.”
Mbana’s death was a devastating loss to the party and the community he served, Jankielsohn said. “His passing is a devastating loss to the DA and the community he served so tirelessly. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
Police investigations into the murder are continuing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating officer, Capt. Sandile Dladla, on 082 453 6245 or 073 226 6788, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be submitted anonymously through the MySAPS App.
