The current Proteas captain, Faf du Plessis, will remain as the team's skipper but he will only be serving in the role in Test cricket.

Following South Africa’s poor performance at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales, questions were raised whether or not the player should retain the leadership role.

There were suggestions that Du Plessis would also survive the axe after Cricket South Africa indicated that heads would roll.

CSA has already confirmed that the contract of Ottis Gibson would not be renewed and his coaching staff of Malibongwe Maketa, Dale Benkenstein, Claude Henderson and Justin Ontong were also let go.

The way forward is with a Director of Cricket who will oversee the national team. The former Proteas and Free State seamer, Corrie van Zyl, will act in the role for at least the tour to India in September and October.

At a press conference on Tuesday morning, Van Zyl indicated that Du Plessis will remain the captain in the longest format of the game, while he suggests that there will be a new skipper in the limited-overs format.

“On the captaincy, it is also important to look forward as well. We are looking towards 2023. Leading to the next World Cup, we need a strategy in terms of the captain.

“In appointing the captain we will have a look at how we will approach that. We will have a selection meeting in the next day to confirm that.

“To answer the question as to whether or not Faf will be the captain, Faf will be the captain of the Test team.

“We talk about the white-ball cricket strategy to 2023 and how that will affect decision-making.”
