Cricket South Africa launched a new innovation on Wednesday which is named 3TeamCricket, and as the name suggests that three teams will be going head-to-head in one match.

The match will be contested over 36 overs, which will feature 2 halves of 18 overs each.

Each of the three teams will field eight players, and the last man standing will get to carry on batting but may only score runs in even numbers such as two’s, fours and sixes.

During the first half, teams will rotate between batting and bowling, and the starting positions will be determined by making use of a draw. The second stanza will see the teams batting in an order determined using the highest scores during the first half. Should the scored be tied, the first half order is reversed.

The bowling team will make use of a new ball for their full 12 overs, and it will be used for both opponents. Each bowler may bowl a maximum of three overs. Any uncompleted overs due to the fall of the 7th wicket is deemed to be completed with dot balls.

The team scoring the most runs will win, while the other two teams will finish second and third respectively according to their runs achieved.

Should there be a tie between two teams for the most runs, the winner will be determined by making use of a super over. If all three teams finish with the same amount of runs, all will be deemed as the winners.

The first match will be played next week Saturday with the Solidarity Cup between the Eagles, Kites and Kingfishers. The former Proteas captain, AB de Villiers, will captain the Eagles, while the current Proteas limited-overs captain, Quinton de Kock, will lead the Kites and the fast bowler, Kagiso Rababa, will skipper the Kingfishers.

The first-ever 3TC match will be contested on 27 June at SuperSport Park in Centurion, and due to the strict Covid-19 safety regulations, will be played behind closed doors. The match will, however, be televised.

All the players, coaches and technical staff will assemble at SuperSport Park three days prior to the game, and they will stay there in an eco-safe zone.
