The West Indies drew first blood yesterday by winning the 1st Test against England at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton by 4 wickets.

The English were dismissed for 313 in their second innings, leaving the visitors needing just 200 runs to claim victory.

Jermaine Blackwood was the star with the bat for the Windies with a fine knock of 96 runs.

West Indies skipper, Jason Holder, says that their bowlers set up the victory on Saturday already.

“It was a long hard toil and a hard-fought day for West Indies, and a day that definitely went in our favour at the back end.

“The reason I say that it was the best day for me is down to the fact that every single time I asked for effort from those bowlers, no-one said: no, I can't, I'm too tired.

“They just all kept running in.

“At that stage, when Stokesy and Zak (Crawley) were batting, the game started to look a little bit less likely for us to win.

“We knew we couldn't lose. We backed ourselves not to lose, but we wanted to win the game, and we knew how important it was for us to win.

“Yesterday's (Saturday) effort was by far the best effort I've seen from this group.

“And not only the bowlers, but the fielders kept running around, getting through the overs, and we all kept our energy upright throughout the day.”

The Windies seamer, Shannon Gabriel, was named as the man of the match for his nine wickets for 137 runs.

The players head up to Manchester now for the 2nd Test which starts on Thursday at Old Trafford.
