Knights to appoint interim captain─── MORGAN PIEK 14:26 Mon, 16 Nov 2020
The VKB Knights will have to make do without the services of the wicketkeeper, Wandile Makwetu, for next weeks’ CSA 4-Day Series game against the Lions.
Makwetu will still be on compassionate leave following the untimely passing of his dad, Kimi, last week.
This poses a captaincy issue in the team as the regular captain, Pite van Biljon, will be away with the Proteas for the T20 International series against England.
The Knights coach, Allan Donald, told OFM Sport that Makwetu will not be available for selection next week. “His return to play will not happen at the Wanderers.
“We have given him ample time. The message was to take his time and he has to tell when he will be ready to return.
“We are very mindful of the severity of what has happened, so we will make sure that he gets enough time with his family.”
There are several options available to the Knights regarding the captaincy, and these included the seasoned spinner Shaun von Bergh, while the batsman, Raynard van Tonder, captained the South Africa U19’s during the 2018 ICC World Cup in New Zealand.
Donald and the management have their stand-in captain confirmed tomorrow.
