Australia postpone tour to South Africa─── MORGAN PIEK 12:18 Tue, 02 Feb 2021
Cricket in South Africa has been dealt a major blow with Australia pulling out of next month’s tour. The tour which was set to start in March would have seen the Proteas and Australia lock horns in a series of three Tests.
Cricket Australia has informed Cricket South Africa about their decision to rather have the tour postponed due to the Covid-19 situation in South Africa.
In a statement, Interim CEO of Cricket Australia, Nick Hockley, stated that it would be too risky to tour South Africa at this time.
“Following extensive due diligence with medical experts, it has become clear that traveling from Australia to South Africa at this current time poses an unacceptable level of health and safety risk to our players, support staff and the community.
“We acknowledge the significant amount of work by CSA in planning for the tour, during which we made it clear that CA was prepared to take on additional cost and effort to make the series happen.
“This decision has not been made lightly and we are extremely disappointed, especially given the importance of continuing international cricket at this time, our valued relationship with CSA, and our aspirations to compete in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship.”
Cricket South Africa will respond to the news in due course.
