Cobras hammer the Knights at Newlands─── MORGAN PIEK 11:12 Fri, 19 Mar 2021
The Cape Cobras have won their first game of the 2020/21 CSA 4-Day Series by beating the VKB Knights by an innings and 215 runs at Newlands in Cape Town.
In reply to the Knights 1st innings of 181 runs, the Cobras declared their innings on 523/8 on Thursday.
The opening batsman, Pieter Malan, was the star with the willow for the Cobras with an unbeaten knock of 264 - which was also the highest individual knock by a batsman in Cobras history. He was well supported by the wicketkeeper, Kyle Verreynne, who contributed with 109 runs.
Patrick Kruger was the pick of the Knights bowlers with 45/3 in 14 overs.
The Knights were bowled out for a mere 127 runs in their second innings.
Only Farhaan Behardien with an unbeaten 48 and Jacques Snyman with 29 managed to trouble the scorers, while Raynard van Tonder with 18 runs was the only other batsman in the team to reach double figures in the innings.
The hero with the ball for the Cobras was the Proteas spinner, George Linde, who took seven wickets in the innings to return the incredible figures of 29/7 in 21.2 overs. Tshepo Moreki bagged two scalps while Imran Manack also claimed a wicket.
The heavy defeat brings the Knights chances of hosting the final to an end and thus has also closed out their season.
The Dolphins are in a commanding position against the Warriors at St George's Park, and they are expected to host the final at Kingsmead in Durban. At this stage, they will most likely take on the Titans in the final.
