Windies to bat first in St Lucia─── MORGAN PIEK 17:14 Thu, 10 Jun 2021
The West Indies won the toss and elected to have a bat in the 1st Test against the Proteas at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia.
The batsman, Temba Bavuma, has been ruled out of the Test due to a hip injury and this sees the wicketkeeper-batter, Kyle Verreynne, making his debut.
The former Knights player, Keegan Petersen, is also making his long-awaited debut.
The Proteas have also opted for four-bowler seam attack, with Keshav Maharaj being the only spinner.
Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortjé, and Wiaan Mulder make up the Proteas seam attack.
The former Proteas fast bowler and bowling coach, Allan Donald, told OFM Sport that from his experience a bowler needs to take advantage of the new ball.
“The new ball will be absolutely vital and whatever there is in the pitch, you've got to try and utilise that because it doesn't last long.
“It really gets hot and humid there.
“The other thing that we worked on very hard is the reverse swing issue.”
It’s the first time in eleven years that the West Indies and Proteas are playing in a Test in the Caribbean.
