The Proteas lead by 31 runs after day one of the 1st Test against the West Indies in St Lucia. The Windies won the toss and elected to bat first, but were bowled out for 97 runs, which is their lowest ever score against South Africa in a Test.

Lungi Ngidi was the chief destroyer for the Proteas with 5/19 in 13.5 overs, while Anrich Nortjé for 4/35.

Jason Holder top scored for the hosts, while the captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope each scored 15 runs. Both opening batters were bowled out by Anrich Nortjé.

In reply the Proteas posted 128/4 by the close of play.

Ngidi said he has a has a clear role in the team and that is to build pressure.

“My role definition has been very clear. It's been to make sure I keep one end quiet.

“We do have some really quick bowlers and a lot of batsmen were struggling with them so for me to give them nothing was part of the plan.

The seamer added that he enjoys playing with the Dukes ball which is being used in the series.

“I prefer the Dukes ball. It stays harder and moves around a lot more.

“The Kookaburra ball tends to get a bit soft and once it gets soft. It doesn't really swing and you try to look for reverse swing.

“The SG gets scuffed up really quick and it's a really hard ball to maintain.

“But the Dukes ball is really a test of skill. Once you can get the wrist position right and hone in on your area, you can be very successful with this ball.

“Having bowled with it now, I hope I bowl with it for many, many years.”

Play at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground resumes at 16:00 (SA time) with Rassie van der Dussen 34* and Quinton de Kock 4* being the men at the crease.
