Former Proteas all-rounder Wiese set to play for Namibia─── MORGAN PIEK 17:00 Thu, 19 Aug 2021
The former Proteas and Titans all-rounder, David Wiese, may be on debut for Namibia at the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
Wiese will be targeting just his second World Cup after representing South Africa five years ago at the tournament in India.
While Wiese is eligible to play for Namibia, he still needs to be selected to represent the county.
The 36-year-old Wiese may very well play against the Itec Knights next month in the preseason T20's and 50-over match in Bloemfontein, however, is currently still playing county cricket in England and could miss the tour.
The former Proteas all-rounder, Albie Morkel, who is now the coach of Namibia, told OFM Sport that they are excited for the trip to Bloemfontein and added that he can’t confirm the availability of Wiese.
“This last year has been a disaster for us in terms of playing cricket because of the Covid outbreak and restrictions.
“Most of our tours got postponed so it’s been a very tough 18 months for us as a team to stay focussed on the job at hand and making sure the players still improve without game time.
“We’ve had tournaments against Uganda, SA Emerging, Zimbabwe Emerging recently, with games against the Titans in Windhoek, and then our tour to Bloem coming up.
“I must admit there is a massive excitement to get on the road again, and getting good preparations in for our World Cup stage that will begin on the 26th of September when we go into our bubble again in Dubai.
“The Knights have a very good squad, some proven match-winners, and very talented and exciting young players, so I’m sure the games will be action-packed, just what both teams need as we prepare for the cricket coming up.
“David is still playing some county cricket in the UK for Sussex at this stage, and I don’t think he will be joining us for the trip.
“He is a massive gain for us, and I’m sure he will add a lot of experience and skill to our squad.”
The Knights and Namibia will battle it out at the Mangaung Oval in early September.
