The Proteas are off the mark at the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman, following an eight-wicket win against the West Indies.

The Windies had a bat first and were restricted to 143/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Evin Lewis top-scored for the Calypso Boys with 56, while Dwaine Pretorius was the pick of the Proteas bowlers with 3/17 in two overs.

The fast bowler, Anrich Nortjé, was simply outstanding with the ball and while he only took one wicket in his four overs, his spell with the ball was a game-changer with 1/14.

Aiden Markram with 51 not out and Rassie van der Dussen with an unbeaten 43, steered South Africa to the victory in 18.2 overs.

The tone was set by the opening batsman, Reeza Hendricks, who was as classy as ever in his shot selection with 39 off of 30 balls.

The Windies spinner, Akeal Hosein, was the only bowler to take a wicket as Temba Bavuma was run out for 2 runs.

The Proteas captain, Bavuma, lauded Markram and Van der Dussen.

“It was much better than our first game. There were obviously areas where we knew we had to improve on, more particularly our batting.

“Our bowling was outstanding again and it was a good day for us.

“Those are the performances that we've been looking for with the bat. The bowling has been carrying us.

“Aidan has been hitting the ball wonderfully of late. He has been doing it in the nets so it's wonderful to see him doing it out there.”

The Proteas face Sri Lanka on Saturday in Sharjah in their third group game.
