India has been hit with a major blow ahead of their three-Test series against South Africa later this month.

India is set to tour South Africa for a Test against the Proteas at SuperSport Park, the Wanderers and Newlands.

The in-form batter, Rohit Sharma, has been ruled out of the series after he sustained a hamstring injury during a training session in Mumbai.

He will be replaced on tour by Priyank Panchal who captained India A in two of the recent unofficial Tests against South Africa A in Bloemfontein.

The Proteas in their turn were also hit with a bit of a setback as the destructive batter, Quinton de Kock, will miss a portion of the series due to the birth of his first-born.

The Western Province wicketkeeper, Kyle Verreynne, could be on duty with the gloves in the absence of De Kock.

The first Test between the Proteas and India in Centurion gets underway on 26 December.
