The Proteas batter, Rassie van der Dussen, holds record for the highest batting average in One-Day International cricket.

On Wednesday, Van der Dussen, scored an unbeaten 129 off of 96 balls to help guide South Africa to a comfortable 31-run victory over India in the 1st ODI at Boland Park in Paarl.

The knock was also the middle-order batters highest score in the 50-over format.

Van der Dussen holds an average of 73.62 runs per innings.

The batter said his focus is on what the team expects from him.

“I don't pay too much attention to it. You are sometimes aware of it because they show it on television, but I think for me in every innings you are starting on zero and trying to assess the match situation and what's needed from you.

“I suppose in my One-Day International career, I've been really clear when I go into bat and to know what was needed from me.

“I'm glad I could play a match-winning knock in the end. I probably wasn’t too happy with my performances in the Tests, and I didn’t contribute the way I wanted to.

“Coming into the ODI series it was important to start on a good note and give the team what they expect from me.”

The recently retired Port Elizabeth-born Dutch great, Ryan ten Doeschate is second with an average of 67.00, while the Indian legend, Virat Kohli, is third with 59.03 in his 255 innings.

Along with among others, Quinton de Kock, Van der Dussen, is the third fastest player to score 1000 runs in the format.
